A John Deere 737 or 757 can put in a lot of years of work. Eventually, though, even a well-maintained commercial mower may reach the point where repairing the original engine no longer makes sense.
For owners who still have a solid deck, frame, hydraulics, and drivetrain, replacing or “repowering” the mower with a new engine can be a practical alternative to replacing the entire machine. One option for these older John Deere zero-turn mowers is the Kawasaki FH721D-S08-S 25 HP horizontal-shaft engine. It is particularly well suited to John Deere 757 applications and can also be used for certain John Deere 737 repower projects when the proper components are transferred from the original engine. Before ordering an engine, however, it is important to understand what a repower involves. Matching horsepower alone is not enough.
What Engine Originally Came in the John Deere 737 and 757?
The John Deere 737 and 757 are closely related commercial zero-turn mowers, but they did not leave the factory with exactly the same engine. According to John Deere specifications:

- The John Deere 757 was equipped with a Kawasaki FH721D, rated at 25 HP.
Both are air-cooled V-twin engines with a displacement of 675cc, but the difference in the original engine model is worth knowing before beginning a replacement. For a 757 owner replacing an FH721D, the FH721D-S08-S stays within the same basic Kawasaki FH721D family.
For a 737 owner, installing an FH721D-S08-S is more accurately described as a repower or conversion, since the mower originally used an FH680D. That distinction matters because an engine can have similar dimensions and power output without every mower-specific component being identical.
What Is the Kawasaki FH721D-S08-S?
The Kawasaki FH721D-S08-S is a 25 HP, 675cc, four-stroke OHV V-twin gasoline engine with a horizontal crankshaft.

Is the FH721D-S08-S a Direct Replacement for a John Deere 757?
It is a popular replacement option for the John Deere 757, but “direct replacement” can be misleading if it suggests that you simply remove the old engine, set the new one in place, and reconnect everything. Do Not Throw Away Your Old Engine
When an engine fails completely, the natural reaction may be to get it out of the shop as quickly as possible. For a repower project, the old engine is often your best source of application-specific hardware. Why Repower an Older John Deere Instead of Replacing the Mower?
A repower does not make sense for every mower. But many commercial mowers outlive their original engines.
If the rest of the machine remains in good working condition, an engine replacement can extend its useful life without the expense of replacing the entire mower. Consider the overall condition of:

- Frame

- PTO system
- Electrical system
- Tires and casters
The more of the mower that is still in solid condition, the stronger the case for repowering it. It is better to evaluate the entire machine than to make the decision based only on the age showing on the hour meter.
Heavy-Duty Air Filtration Is Another FH721D-S08-S Advantage
Commercial mowing creates a rough environment for an engine. Dust, dry grass, pollen, dirt, and fine debris are constantly moving through the air around the mower.
The FH721D-S08-S includes a Donaldson heavy-duty dual-element air cleaner, giving the engine additional filtration intended for debris-heavy operating conditions. That does not eliminate normal filter inspection and maintenance, but it is a useful feature for equipment that spends long days operating in dusty environments. Keeping cooling passages and filtration systems clean remains particularly important on an air-cooled engine.
After Installation: Do a Careful First Start
A newly installed engine should not immediately be treated as though it has been in the mower for years.
Before the first start, go back over the installation. Check that:
- Engine oil has been added to the proper level
- Fuel connections are secure
- Wiring is properly connected and safely routed
- Throttle and choke controls operate correctly
- Exhaust components are secure
- PTO and drive components are aligned correctly
- No tools or loose hardware remain near moving parts

It can also be used in certain John Deere 737 repower applications, but remember that the 737 originally came with an FH680D. That makes confirming the specific mower, existing engine, and required transferred components particularly important.
Match the application, not just the horsepower.
